Background and History of Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana Born in 1958 and 1962 respectively, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have carved out more than just a niche in the fashion industry. Rather, the duo have built an empire based on what they see as dignified, yet raw and sensual fashion design.

The Italian designers came together in 1982 and were fobbed off early on as 'too young' of all things. We wonder what those critics have to say now? Much of the style is said to come from Dolce's Sicilian origins, for which Madonna has become a big-time fan. D&G have even come up with designs for one of her world tours, which is likely to have helped them in a most positive fashion.

They are Partners both in life and in business, the pair met while working as assistants in an atelier in Milan. Sharing a love of the baroque, they made their name together in 1985, when the organizers of the Milano Collezioni invited them to take part in a fashion show to launch "New Talents". The following year, they presented their first independent women's ready-to-wear show. Since then, they have introduced menswear and a line of signature fragrances, and opened shops in Italy, Japan, Hong Kong and, in 1999,in London (the London salon, designed by British architect David Chipperfield, is testament to the designers' love of mixing their own Mediterranean spirit with English eccentricity).

And up to now they still making and designing their products and D&G is always keeping up with the new trends.

The Tiger test ride

Today at lunch I met up with Mike at MCC in Villa Park so he could test ride the Tiger. This is it! The big moment is here. This is the last bike on the list that he needs to ride to figure out what bike he is going to purchase for touring.

He likes the Tiger the best, it fits him well and it's a good looking bike, but how will it ride?

Out of all his bike choices, I like the Tiger the best too. Too bad I'm too short to ride this bike.

Well, there he goes.

Mike went and did his test ride and I went back to work.

Day 2: ST.N coffee meet in Palmyra, WI

In the morning we woke up, took showers, the bathrooms were nice and showers were free. The pop machine stole my $1.50 and then I realized I had an emergency can of Red Bull stashed under the seat of the ST3. I need my caffeine in the morning especially when I haven’t gotten any good sleep the night before.

We took off for the ST.N coffee meet which was in Palmyra, WI just half an hour from here. A lot of people were already there. After a latte and some chit chat and tire kicking it was time for Mike to ride the Suzuki V-strom 1000, but he was temporarily distracted by a shiny Triumph Tiger parked across the street. After checking that bike out, we went back to the V-strom and Mike took it for a short ride.

ST.Ners leaving for a ride to the lunch spot

Just before noon, Mike and I left Palmyra heading home and stopped in LaGrange at the General Store for lunch. I had a veggie pita sandwich, which was very good. I especially liked the Dijon mayo. The weather was a carbon copy of yesterday – perfect!

After a nice lunch outside, we took off for home, traveling through Williams Bay, Marengo, Saint Charles and finally arriving in the driveway at about 5PM.

A cicada in my driveway

After the last two weeks of cicada activity around the house, The cicadas were the loudest today in the driveway. The pulsating buzzing sounded just like the alien spaceships from the move “War of the worlds”. Many of them are dying now, so pretty soon it will be quiet again and we’ll be able to use the back yard. They won’t be back for another 17 years.

Day 1: Mendota, IL & Whitewater, WI

So Mike needs his own street bike, but in order to shorten his "bike list" he needs to ride the bikes and since the motorcycle dealers that sell Japanese don’t allow test rides, I arranged for Mike to meet up with some ST.Ners this weekend to test ride their bikes. ST.Ners are the nicest people.

First on the list was a second generation Yamaha FZ1. Bill in Peoria, Illinois was kind enough to meet up with us in Mendota, IL, a bit closer north, since after this stop we were heading in to Wisconsin. We arrived in Mendota late since I haven’t been out this way in two years and I had no idea that the urban sprawl was in full force all along Route 34. Traffic was horrible, but we made it there only 30 minutes late.

Bill's 2006 Yamaha FZ1

Bill and the 2006 red FZ1 were already there and Mike took his test drive, and since we met up at a McDonalds, we decided to have lunch there. I’m really lovin’ the southwest salad and I don’t even like salads.

The day was perfect, sunny with no trace of any clouds and in the high 70’s. After lunch we rode a bit west and then turned north and crossed in to Wisconsin, at about that time the roads became curvy and hilly and we finally got off the main roads and took some smaller back roads, now heading north and then east.

The big bumps on 78 just south of 39, made me loose my bottle of water that was sitting in my bag with the zipper unzipped. It fell out when I hit a big bump and hit my boot and rolled off in the grass. It was still half full. But loosing a half full bottle of water is nothing compared to what Mike lost on this bumpy road, his camera just jumped out of his pocket and shattered in to a million pieces on the road. He retrieved the memory card from it, although when we got home we found out that the card was damaged, so all the pictures up to this point are gone forever. Bummer!

Chelet-style architecture

We had no luck finding a camping side for tonight last night on-line, so we brought some phone numbers and now pulled over at the Culver’s in New Glarus, WI to make some phone calls. All the state parks in the area were booked up, we found a private campsite in Whitewater, WI that had some tent sites available. After we finished some ice cream Sunday’s, we took off arriving in Whitewater before 6PM. We found a hot dog joint downtown on RT 12, the Downtown area was pretty deserted.

Dinner at Dapper Dogs in Whitewater, WI

Dinner: For me corn dog and chicken fingers, for Mike corndog and chili dog

Dinner consisted of a corndog and a chili dog for Mike and a corn dog and chicken strips for me. The food was good and cheap. We took off toward the camp site but couldn’t find it at first, we did stumble on to a camp site in the Kettle Moraine State Park off “P” road, and even though there was one spot open on the bulletin board, when we rode thought the campsite, we noticed that someone already snagged it.

Arriving at the Scenic Ridge campground

After another phone call we had better directions and arrived at the Scenic Ridge camp ground off “P” at the end of R & W town line. This place was part central. We got the camp site, I guess they don’t get a lot of motorcycles here because they didn’t know how we should fill out the “vehicle” portion of the registration and at $15 per person I can see why more motorcyclists don’t come here.

Our camp site

We rode up a hill to our site which was tucked away and surrounded by trees, so we couldn’t see anyone. But unfortunately we could hear everyone partying until late at night and because there was a seasonal camp site at the top of the road with campers and seasonal’ houses, there were cars and golf cars running up and down the road right next to our camp site until wee hours of the night. It was hard to sleep, but at least the weather was nice and it only got in to the mid 50’s at night. I don’t recommend staying here unless you want to stay up all night and drink with the people that came here every weekend.

Dixon, Illinois

It was a really nice day today. Mike and I wanted to do a short ride. He’s in the process of looking for a street bike, but until he gets his own he can ride mine, I‘ve got three of them after all.

Sharing a sandwitch for lunch by the river

We took off toward Dixon, to ride along the Rock River. Mike really wanted to ride the 954RR, so he took that bike. I took the ST3. But a while later we pulled over to switch bikes and for the reminder of the day he kept riding the ST3. The 954RR just wasn’t as comfortable and just a bit over 6’3”, he’s really too tall for all my bikes, since the ST3 has a shaved seat and the 954RR is lowered by 1”.

My Ducati 900SS is sold

The Duc waiting for its new owner to ride it home

Tonight I sold my 2000 Ducati 900SS, which I purchased just a year ago, on June 8th. It was a good bike and never game me any problems during the 1700 or so miles I rode it, and I might have kept it if it wasn’t for my new interest in riding dirt and the fact that the 900SS just wasn‘t that comfortable to ride and most of my day rides are at least 300 miles or more.

The 900SS has pretty much sat since the winter and whenever I had an opportunity to ride the pavement, I either chose the ST3, for it’s long distance capability and hard luggage for securely storing items on the bike when unattended or I chose the 954RR for the shorter rides, a fun bike and a very comfortable bike. I guess I just realized that I’m already set with the three bikes, a dual sport, a sport touring bike and a sport bike. I will definitely miss the sounds of the dry clutch and that sweet sounding CF exhaust. I will have to get an aftermarket exhaust for my ST3.

Above are some of the pictures I used in the "for sale" ad, such a clean bike, looks like new
